Opportunities abound for guided whitewater rafting trips in and around the mid-Atlantic region and New England. The Whitewater Challengers Adventure Centers specialize in Scout rafting trips on the Lehigh River Gorge (White Haven, PA) as well as the Black River Canyon (Dexter, NY), the Moose River (Old Forge NY), the Hudson River Gorge (North River, NY) and the Salmon River (Pulaski, NY). Last year, over 11,000 Scouts attended special "Scout Rally Weekends" at the Lehigh River Adventure Center. Hundreds more enjoyed rafting trips in New York's Adirondack Mountains and Finger Lakes regions. Come for a day, a weekend or a week. Either way, you and your Scouts will enjoy an exhilarating experience on the river, as well as a host of other interesting and exciting programs and activities on land. Raft trips are rated for various age and experience levels: Very Easy (suitable down to age 5 - Lehigh River) Call 800-443-8554, email us at Rafting888@aol.com or check out http://www.wc-rafting.com/scouting.htm for more details.
Lehigh Gorge State Park is home to one of the most popular and scenic rails-to-trails bicycle rides in the East. You and your Scouts will follow the route of 18th century explorers, and 19th century coal barons, as you explore the river gorge that carried coal and lumber from the mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania to port cities like Philadelphia in the early 1800's. Bikes, shuttles, maps and guides are all available at the Whitewater Challengers Adventure Center. The sport of Orienteering originated in Sweden, remains very popular throughout Europe, and is gaining popularity across the United States. Scouts learn how to navigate in a wooded area using only a compass and a topographical map. Our form of Orienteering includes a session where each teams starts at the same time and seeks out as many as 20 control points (marked locations) as they can, within a set time period. Success at this sport depends on team work, and meeting the physical and mental challenges involved in the course. Kayaking at the Whitewater Adventure Centers consists of a two-day instructional program that teaches the basics of the sport, including the wet exit, bow rescue, Eskimo roll, and other safety and steering maneuvers. The first day of the clinic is held on still water, where Scouts are taught about their equipment, kayaking safety, and a range of basic paddling strokes. The second day of the clinic is usually scheduled for a relatively tame section of moving whitewater. All equipment and instructors are provided by the Adventure Center. Call 800-443-8554, email us at Rafting888@aol.com or check out http://www.wc-rafting.com/KayakingSchool.htm for more details.
In Disc Golf, players count the number of "strokes" (throws) it takes to get from the Tee to the Hole, for each of the 18 holes of the Disc Golf course. Disc Golf originated in 1974, and combines a favorite recreational pastime - frisbee throwing - with one of the world's great sports - golf. Scouts are grouped in pairs or in quartets, and maintain their own scorecard during the 90-minute game. Each match conducted by the Adventure Center includes the Discs, shuttles to and from the course, an instructor, Disc Golf course maps and scoring cards for each player. Overnight Camping at the Adventure Center Scouts are welcome to spend a night, a weekend or a week at the Lehigh Adventure Center, where a full range of camping facilities are available: hot showers, flush toilets, recreation fields, sand volleyball, snack bar, meal service and a fully stocked outdoor store. Our wooded sites are designed for tent camping, but RV's and motor homes can sometimes be accommodated if reserved in advance. Water stations are spotted at several locations, and a nearby pavilion and group area can be reserved for special functions and activities. Camping space is limited, and reservations are almost always required. Call 800-443-8554, email us at Rafting888@aol.com or check out http://www.wc-rafting.com/Camping.htm for more details.
